“Over the last 5 years, local government has taken up the challenge to transform the way that citizens are able to access services. Local authorities will be over 97% e-enabled by the turn of the year” says Jim Fitzpatrick, Minister for local e-government.
This is a significant success story for e-government and the effort placed on innovation and access to services via new technologies such as the internet has been staggering.
With over 95% mobile phone penetration in the UK, iMeta believes that mobiles represent a viable access channel for delivery of information to citizens and for democratic engagement.
iMeta has worked closely with Southampton City council to run their most successful Youth elections to date experiencing a staggering 1775% increase in voter turn out. They provided them with a fast, secure text voting system via mobile phone that enabled SCC to engage young people in the decision voting process through a medium they were comfortable with; Results were viewed live at a secure online reporting portal removing the need for a manual count and reducing costs.
Greater consultation and notification between Councils and citizens is key and iMeta facilitates this process by providing a means for councils to engage in dialogue quickly and cost effectively via different e-channels assisting them in meeting priority outcomes.
